All Android Versions Explained

The word “android” is something that this new generation is more than just excited about.

Everyone is screaming for what is android.

With all its perks and surprises that do not seem to end with each release, this modern age is going to be technologically delighted.

Every product unveiled is definitely a grand surprise to everybody.

  • Android 1.0 (Alpha) – Made its first appearance on September 23, 2008. The HTC Dream made by HTC was the first android to hit the market. Features include camera support, web browser, media player, and YouTube video player, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support and many others which are also in present-day androids.
  • Android 1.1 (Beta) – On February 9, 2009, Android 1.1, the updated version of the HTC Dream made its debut. At first, this version was for HTC Dream only. This version had a new API, contains more features and it eliminated bugs.
  • Cupcake – Based on Linux kernel 2.6.27, this version was the first to be named after a dessert. Making its first appearance on March 27, 2009, it was packed with even more sophisticated features making its predecessor of almost three months looked really old. This version was also the trend setter for the theme of future android releases.
  • Donut – Just when the world thought things couldn’t get any better, on September 15, 2009, out came Donut which was based on Linux kernel 2.6.29. Its features had simply blown away its predecessors back to the Middle Ages.
  • Éclair – Still based on Linux kernel 2.6.29 this version was quick on the heels of Donut. It contains features that either says “faster” or “bigger”. Simply put, it has more to offer; and on October 26, 2009, Éclair opened its bag full of goodies and set the bar a notch higher for the next generation android.
  • Froyo – Based on Linux kernel 2.6.32, this android version whose name actually means frozen yogurt was released on May 20, 2010. It was all about improved speed, enhanced memory and best performance
  • Gingerbread – February 9, 2011 saw an android version that fixed the Bluetooth bug in Samsung Galaxy S. It also improved the network performance for the Nexus S 4G and most important of all, it promised longer battery life.
  • Honeycomb – the first batch of this version hit the store shelves on February 22, 2011. It features new “holographic” interface, redesigned keyboard for faster typing, and it has the ability to encrypt all data to name a few.
  • Ice cream sandwich – Released on October 19, 2011 it did a makeover to the “Holo” interface with its new Roboto Font family.
  • Jelly Bean – July 9, 2012 saw the arrival of an android version aimed to improve functionality and performance of the user interface.
  • KitKat – Groomed to run on a “greater range of devices” than its predecessors this version made its debut on September 3, 2013.
  • Lollipop – although not faster than Kitkat, Lollipop has a remarkable battery life. This little sugary surprise is going to be released September or October this year.
  • Marshmallow – Android 6.0 Marshmallow does great job of fixing issues that were in old versions, it add a lot of new features. The new look and feels of icons are awesome, thanks to the visual polish to the design of icons and rest visual elements.
  • Nougat – Android Nougat officially released in 2016. The new OS offers safe, fast and secure software to root android device. Android Nougat (7.0 v) brings a number of new & improve features, including improved notifications, a slightly revamped User Interface & better onboard security against malware.
  • Oreo – Android Oreo is released in 2017, has some fantastic new features one such features, the biggest things added to this OS are Picture-in-Picture (PIP), Notification Channels, Auto fill, and Project Treble. Now Android Oreo will run on phones with 1GB of RAM! It will also improve on battery part that will save your battery life. Discussing about UI android Oreo now has an excellent collection of eye-catching emojis, and also impressive fonts.
  • Pie – The newest & latest version of Android is called Pie (version 9.0) of the operating system. There are some major changes in Pie that will change the way you use Android. Some of the new features such as Adaptive Battery, App Actions (similar to the app shortcuts), a New Home Button and many features are added making Android Pie the up-to-date OS as of writing this.
